Elk Hunting
Kentucky River Properties has worked in conjunction with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation in the reintroduction of elk to the mountains of eastern Kentucky after an absence of more than a century. Through these efforts, the once native elk are again thriving – now on the habitat provided by the forest cover interspersed with the grasslands of reclaimed surface mines. From an initial release of 1,500 elk, the KDFWR manages and maintains a population estimated at 10,000.
KRP works closely with the KDFWR to manage the hunting on our properties, through their voucher program. During the 2016 hunt, 40 elk were taken from KRP property, with some of the bulls being near state record size. We also have an abundance of other game animals such as deer, turkey, rabbit, grouse, and raccoon.
